Anne Brassey Heritage Open Day

11 Sep 2024 - 2:00 PM to 3:00 PMHastings Library
Event

Hastings Library

11 September

2 to 3pm

The Brassey Institute, now known as Hastings Library, is often linked to the town’s former Member of Parliament, Lord Thomas Brassey (1836-1918). However, it was his remarkable wife, Lady Annie Brassey (1839-1887) — a celebrated authoress, intrepid world traveller, and avid collector — who played a pivotal role in shaping the institute. Her contributions ranged from curating exhibitions to hosting functions and chairing events. She was even credited with the benevolent donation of the institute to the town in 1887.

Join us for a fascinating talk during Heritage Open Days, where Dr Sarah French, a photo historian and researcher of Brassey’s collections, will delve into the extraordinary life of Lady Brassey and the rich history of this Grade II listed building.
