We are transitioning to a new inter-library loans process. We are unable to process online ILL requests during this transition. Please speak to a member of staff in your local library to place an ILL request.
The British Library is continuing to experience disruption following a cyber-attack in October 2023. As a result of this, we are unable to process ILLs from their catalogue.

Request to purchase
If you can't find the item you are looking for in our collection, we may be able to obtain it for you. If you think the item you are looking for would be useful to have in the library, you can make a purchase request. While we will consider every request placed, we cannot guarantee that a request will result in a purchase. We receive a high volume of requests and we process them in the order in which they are received.
An item for purchase must be:
- A book that is of interest to our East Sussex Library customers
- Produced by reputable publisher
- Has purchase rights in the UK
We do not purchase course books, textbooks, specialist or academic literature, or school reading schemes

Request inter-library loan
We also provide an inter-library loan (ILL) service.
ILLs are requested from other library authorities, universities or the British Library:
- For research purposes
- Books that are out of print
- Academic works
These requests have a non-refundable deposit of £2, and:
- A further charge of £5 if it is a standard inter-library loan
- A further charge of £13 if it is a British library or University loan.
To request an item on inter-library loan, please visit an East Sussex library.
You can pay charges at any East Sussex Library or online, by logging into your account and navigating to Fines and Charges in your Dashboard.
