The smell of hay

Bassani, Giorgio, 1916-20002014
Books, Manuscripts
These stories of the Jewish-Italian middle class of Ferrara seen on the eve of the Fascist anti-Semitic laws have a dimension of irony as well as wasted lives. Bassani returns to the city with the narrator of 'The Garden of the Finzi-Continis', and his poignant mixture of intimacy and eloquence. Amongst some familiar places and characters from the previous novels - the Jewish Cemetery, the Lattes clan - there are glimpses of many other lives underpinned by impending tragedy.
