Born at the mid-point of WW2 in Northern Ireland , to an Irish mother and a Welsh soldier-father, the author experienced an eclectic childhood between birth and the age of fifteen. Early experience and growth took place in that restorative and uncertain era of national and family renewal, following the end of the war, and was nurtured by residency within several diverse local cultures. The narrative straggles several locations - Northern Ireland, Brighton and Rye in Sussex, Tunbridge Wells in Kent, Bexley on the edge of Greater London, and South Wales. The story is not intended to be a comprehensive family history but rather a recalling of discrete memories from boyhood, predominantly episodic, reflecting place and time. A key intent is to allow the voice and mind of the child to emerge from within the 1940s and 1950s geographical and social landscapes . The flow of the narrative encompasses a boyhood world that embraced influences such as the pleasures and stresses of schooling, temporary housing, life in a newly constructed Council Estate, cinema, radio, a developing interest in nature, cycling, fishing , football, reading, and delightfully formative periods living with grandparents in Northern Ireland and South Wales. Ultimately, the book is a celebration of childhood as a foundation for the rest of life.
