Hastings Fishing Community with John Cole

Hastings Fishing Community with John Cole

Hastings Library

Wednesday 21 May

2pm

The Hastings fishing community has been in existence for over a thousand years. It is a community that is on the edge of extinction. Their work is very tough and often dangerous, caught in gale force winds, their boats swamped and in danger of sinking, unsure whether they’ll make it back ashore.

Join professional photojournalist John Cole, who has been documenting this community since 1991.

John Cole has been a professional photojournalist for over forty years. Along with photographing the Hastings fishing community, he has photographed the building of the Jerwood Gallery and the re-building of our beloved Pier.

Shopping in History, with Professor Rachel Bowlby

Shopping in History, with Professor Rachel Bowlby

This Local History and Communities Month, join Professor Rachel Bowlby for a fascinating insight into the history of shopping and Heathfield's very own high street.

Learn more about our relationship with shopping, how this has evolved over the years and the social and economic impact it has had; both on a national scale and a local one.

Discover what daily life along the high street was like in times gone by, and experience the engaging first-hand accounts of diarist Thomas Turner, who ran a local shop in the 18th Century selling wares ranging from cheese and hats to coffins.

The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A session and the opportunity to have books signed by the author herself.

This event is free and you do not need to be a library member to attend. To book your place, click the 'Register for event' button above.
