The Reading Friends group meet weekly at Hailsham Library to talk about reading and anything else that interests them. You don't have to read anything before the session and everyone is welcome so come along, meet new people and share stories together.

No booking is required and you don't have to be a library member to take part.

Online in every library

You can now watch a range of recorded National Theatre productions from the comfort of your local library in East Sussex.

In partnership with Drama Online, library members can now watch a selection of productions including 2015’s Everyman featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Dermot Crowley, 2018’s Antony and Cleopatra starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okenedo and 2022’s The Crucible directed by Lyndsey Turner.

Access to the productions are only available in our libraries using one of our computers and cannot be accessed from home. You can book a computer at your local library by visiting our website. Please be aware that headphones will not be provided so make sure to bring your own.

Marvellous Makers - Drop-in Craft Kits

Get creative this summer with the Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge!

Collect one of our craft kits and let your imagination run wild! Complete kits in the library or take one home with you.

Each kit contains a selection of different craft materials. Inside you'll find a few ideas of things you could create, but why not challenge yourself and see what you can come up with? Maybe you'll make a rocket, a flick-book, a collage, or a beautiful card to give to someone you love. The possibilities are endless!

Kits are free and you do not have to be a library member to take part. Just drop in to join in.

Please note: Craft kits are not suitable for children under 3 years old and are available only while supplies last.

This Summer Holiday have a go at making your very own Claymation film, guided by our experienced friends from Press Play Films. Children and families will get to create animations using clay, set design and stop motion animation.

Suitable for ages 5 +  All children under 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who will need their own ticket for this event due to limited capacity. Contact details for a responsible adult must be given for children 8 + if unaccompanied.

This summer holiday join Ed Boxall for a fabulous creative session mixing poetry, music, stories and creative activities.

In celebration of the Summer Reading Challenge theme of 'Marvellous Makers' everyone will be able to create their own magical moon to take home inspired by the seven moons that appear in Ed's new book The Castle of Um.

This summer holiday come and join our friends from Primary Workshops for Schools for a Junk Percussion Workshop. It's a wonderful way to make music and think about whether an item is ‘rubbish’ or ‘reusable’ whilst pushing the limits of music and rhythm to another level. Rhythm is everywhere!

Imagine, plan and design a story scene, then bring it to life as a pop up page. Take your new book and skills home with you to complete the story in your own time. What will your amazing story be about? 

This activity can be a bit fiddly so is ideally suited to primary school age children (5 - 12 years).

Please note: Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults do not need to book a separate ticket for themselves.

Marvellous Makers - Junk Modelling!

Get creative this summer with the Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge!

Be like Riley and Rocky, using recycled materials and your imagination to make a model! Bring in some suitable recycled materials from home (list below) and mix them up with items provided on the day. What will you make?!

This activity is perfect for primary school children (4+).

Suitable materials you can bring from home (all items should be empty, clean and dry):

  • Egg cartons
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cardboard
  • Kitchen/toilet roll tubes
  • Ice cream/lolly sticks etc.
