Frantz Schmidt was an executioner. He was a master in his profession, he even had the confirmation of the guild to prove it. During his forty-five years of service (1573-1618), he performed his duties mainly in the imperial city of Nuremberg. He killed 394 people: men, women, sometimes children as well – often torturing them beforehand. However, he treated the profession of executioner as a craft, he did not dazzle with cruelty, but he also did not show regret to the victims. At a time when the detection rate of crimes was very low, only the threat of punishment could deter from violating the social order, and the role of the executioner became indispensable. In this vividly depicted intimate portrait, the author discovers details about the life and work of master Frantz, who tried to prove with all his actions that he deserves respect and recognition. He wanted to free his children from the stigma of outcasts that was associated with his profession. He was an executioner, but he was also a barber, he healed people, he knew anatomy and herbs well. The Executioner's Tale is an extraordinary story about a simple and extraordinary man. It is a colourful portrait of a Renaissance executioner and his world, based on an authentic seventeenth-century diary.
