In the autumn of 1968 Gordon Langley Hall, an English writer, entered the Gender Identity Clinic at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, to undergo what must surely be the most emotionally harassing of operations - as well as one of the rarest - to emerge a few weeks later (the operation successfully completed) to take up a new life and a fresh identity, as Dawn Langley Hall.
