Among the emigrating passengers on the S.S. Kumara leaving England for New Zealand, were three women who had come from Mrs Sweeting's House for Fallen Women. Through a matrimonial agency they had hopes of starting a new life by marrying men they had never met. Lilian was to marry a wealthy business man and become stepmother to his two small children. Belle had dreams of a country life and is excited to be marrying a farmer, but doesn't realise what life on a farm will be like. Nancy, born in a brothel, is the youngest. She has been swept along by her friends' enthusiasm, but begins to have doubts even before they arrive. Nothing turns out to be as straight forward as they imagined.
