Like the Freemans, the Gutteridges, the Stowes, the Hindes, the Tyrells, the Pettits, and others with whom they shared their lives, they have been the farm labourers, the thatchers, the shoemakers, the lacemakers, the carpenters, and the shopkeepers of a traditional market town. Sometimes, they have been their nation's soldiers.
