All six episodes of the ITV miniseries based on the novel by J.G. Farrell and set in British ruled Singapore during the early 1940s. Wealthy rubber merchants Walter Blackett (David Morrissey) and Mr. Webb (Charles Dance) look to restructure their business during a time of increased conflict with Japanese forces. Mr. Webb's son Matthew (Luke Treadaway) travels from Britain to Singapore and proves himself a more worthy candidate to take over the business than Walter's son Monty (Luke Newberry), who leads a lavish and reckless lifestyle. Meanwhile, Vera Chiang (Elizabeth Tan) catches the attention of Matthew and the pair subsequently fall in love, however, suspicions grow that she may be a communist looking to overthrow British rule in Singapore. The episodes are: 'Singapore for Beginners', 'The Great World', 'Engagement', 'The Singapore Grip', 'The Human Condition' and 'Survival Instinct'.
