Biography/History:
Alexander Mordaunt Shairp was born on 13 March 1887 in Totnes, Devon. He was educated at St Paul's School and Lincoln College, Oxford. He spent most of his life as a schoolmaster. The Green Bay Tree (1933) was a major if controversial hit, both in the West End and on Broadway. Shairp was offered a scriptwriting position in Hollywood, which he accepted. It did not last long and he returned to London to resume teaching. He lived in Hampstead with his wife Hilda and stepson Hugh Williams, who became an actor and appeared in some of his stepfather's plays, creating the role of Julian in The Green Bay Tree. Most of Shairp's other plays, such as The Offence (1925) and The Crime at Blossoms (1932), propound the theories of Freud and Havelock Ellis. Shairp died on 18 January 1939.
