The Monte Carlo rally took a break after 1912, but enthusiasts don't give up their obsessions easily. Fitzroy has heard of an unofficial rally taking place in 1914 and is using it as a way to pick up a dead drop of critical information surreptitiously. Euphemia, newly married and still completing her training, goes with him as his navigator. She has to cut her hair and appear to be male - so many things that make Bertram unhappy. During the rally it becomes clear that the other contestants are at odds with each other. Along the way Fitzroy and Euphemia have to discover who they can trust and who is actively hostile as opposed to merely competitive.
