Town criers,or 'bellmen', are depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry and Hastings has had an official town crier since 1735. The annual National Town Criers Championship made its home in Hastings in 1952, and since 1998 the colourful contest has been a feature of 'Hastings Week' in October. This booklet gives the origins and history of the town crier tradition, the history of Hastings town criers, and the story of the National Town Criers Championships.
