Ifor is the gardener at Nanagalan, a manor house on the Welsh borders. When he meets and falls in love with Ella, the daughter of the house, Ifor must stifle his passion and forego his true feelings. He marries Jenny, the local librarian, but his love for Ella casts a shadow over their relationship. When war breaks out, Ifor enlists to fight and is one of a small number of soldiers left behind in France after the evacuation from Dunkirk.
