In this historical novel, set during World War Two, Florence falls in love with Bill, an RAF sergeant. Their passionate love story is cut short when Bill goes to France with the Normandy landings. He is later reported missing and is presumed dead. Florence then discovers that she is pregnant. As she did not marry Bill and his having his baby out of wedlock, she is discharged from the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Heartbroken and ashamed, Florence returns home only to find her mother has been killed and her home destroyed by a bomb. Following the birth of her son Will, she tries to contact Bill's parents, who do not want to help her. Florence gives Will up for adoption, a decision that she never forgets. Later on, grown up and curious about his family, Will discovers that he is adopted and decides to seek his birth parents. Will Florence risk her new life and husband to reunite with her first son?
