Smollett registered the bawdy, brutal side of 18th-century life, but towards the end of his life, he grew mellower, and 'Humphrey Clinker' (1771) is a tale of high good humour. Squire Bramble's picturesque tour of the Britain of George III is full of eccentric characters and comic adventures.
